About the studio
Ok, quick trivia: if you've ever teared up over Demon Slayer or lost a weekend to Sword Art Online, you've already met Aniplex. Founded in 1995 as a Sony Pictures Entertainment offshoot and rebranded Aniplex in 2003, this Tokyo based company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan. Think of Aniplex as the producer sitting behind the curtain: it plans, finances, and distributes anime rather than drawing every frame itself, and it owns the animation studio A-1 Pictures outright. Its catalog reads like a greatest hits list: Sword Art Online, the Fate franchise, Sailor Moon Crystal, and yes, Demon Slayer. Aniplex of America, launched in 2005, carried that catalog straight into the West. Nearly three decades in, it's less a studio and more an anime empire with really good taste in soundtracks.
