Story

Synopsis

A rare solar eclipse draws crowds eager for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to glimpse the invisible Mushi that shape the natural world, but Ginko arrives already wary, warned that this particular eclipse carries real danger. Sure enough, once the sun reappears, a strange black cloud swallows it again, plunging an unlucky farming village into perpetual darkness tied to a Mushi called Hihami. As crops begin to fail and desperation sets in, Ginko has to unravel a mystery connected to a pair of twin girls before the village loses everything to a darkness some of its own people may not actually want lifted.

Mushishi Tokubetsu-hen: Hihamukage is a 45-minute television special based on Yuki Urushibara's manga, animated by Artland, and aired in January 2014, bridging the gap between the original 2005 to 2006 series and the Mushishi Zoku Shou revival that followed later that year. Like the rest of the franchise, it favors patient, folklore-inspired storytelling over conventional dramatic conflict, and it was well received by longtime fans as a satisfying return to Ginko's world after nearly a decade away, helping build momentum ahead of the full continuation season.
