Biography
Atsuhiro Iwakami was born February 7, 1972, in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, Japan [1]. Growing up immersed in film, animation, television dramas, and manga, he initially wanted to work in live-action cinema and cites directors like John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Yasujiro Ozu, and Federico Fellini as influences, alongside an early love of the original Mobile Suit Gundam and a theatrical viewing of Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind [2]. He entered the anime business almost by accident: as a university cinephile focused on live-action film, he was recruited by Ryuzo Shirakawa, then head of SPE Visual Works, the company that became Aniplex, with a simple pitch, "You like films? Why don't you try working with us?" [2]. His breakout project was The Garden of Sinners, his first collaboration with writer Kinoko Nasu and with animation studio ufotable, a partnership that would go on to shape much of his later career [2]. From there he produced or executive-produced an extraordinary run of titles, including the Fate series, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Sword Art Online, and, more recently, Demon Slayer [1][2]. He has served as president of Aniplex since 2016 and received the Watanabe Shin Award in 2021 for his work on Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Mugen Train Arc [1].
