Synopsis

Following the world-altering sacrifice Madoka made at the end of the television series, this film pulls her back into a strange, unstable reality where her friend Homura fights to keep the group together against a threat that seems determined to unravel everything Madoka's wish accomplished. As the true nature of this new world slowly comes into focus, the story reframes the entire franchise's central relationships, particularly Homura's devotion, in a much darker, more possessive light. It is visually stunning and narratively audacious, delivering one of the most divisive, discussed magical girl endings in the genre.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica Movie 3: Hangyaku no Monogatari, known as Rebellion, is a theatrical film continuing the acclaimed Madoka Magica television series, produced by Studio Shaft and directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, released in 2013. It followed two earlier compilation films and delivered substantial new original story content, pushing the franchise's dark deconstruction of the magical girl genre even further into unsettling, morally complex territory. It remains one of the most debated entries in the franchise, celebrated for its ambition even by fans divided over its controversial narrative direction.
