About the studio
MBS, short for Mainichi Broadcasting System, has been on air since December 27, 1950, when it launched as New Japan Broadcasting System with backing from the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper. It started in radio in 1951, added independent TV broadcasting in 1959, and took the MBS name in 1958. Based in Osaka rather than Tokyo, MBS is the Kansai region's anime powerhouse, the key broadcaster behind shows like Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Cardcaptor Sakura reaching western Japan. *Tokyo doesn't get to have all the fun.* As a JNN network affiliate, it works alongside TBS to get late night anime onto Japanese televisions nationwide. In 2017, the company restructured into MBS Media Holdings, spinning broadcasting operations into their own division. Over 70 years since its founding, MBS remains proof that anime's broadcast infrastructure isn't just a Tokyo story, Osaka has been just as essential to getting these shows in front of viewers.
