Synopsis

Before the events of the wider Monogatari series, Koyomi Araragi is a vampire slowly losing his humanity, saved from complete monstrosity by Meme Oshino on the condition that he help track down and defeat the vampire hunters responsible for his condition. This first chapter follows Koyomi's brutal, blood-soaked confrontations as he tries to claw back some semblance of a normal life while barely holding his own violent impulses in check. It's a darker, more action-heavy entry than much of the franchise's later, dialogue-driven installments. Every fight here carries real, lasting physical and emotional consequence.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Akiyuki Shinbo and Tatsuya Oishi at Shaft, Kizumonogatari adapts a prequel novel by NisiOisiN and is frequently singled out as one of the visual and narrative high points of the entire Monogatari franchise, praised for its unusually cinematic action choreography compared to the series' typical dialogue-heavy style. Its lush, expensive-looking animation reflected a significant production investment, and the film trilogy it kicked off is widely considered essential viewing for understanding Koyomi's backstory. It remains a fan favorite entry point into the franchise's darker, more violent register.
