Story

Synopsis

Rei Kiriyama became a professional shogi player at fifteen, but success in the game hasn't translated into happiness; he lives alone, isolated, and quietly overwhelmed by grief and loneliness he doesn't know how to process. The warm, chaotic Kawamoto sisters next door slowly pull him out of his shell, offering him something closer to a real family than he's had in years, even as his shogi career forces him into increasingly high-pressure matches against rivals with their own complicated lives. The story balances competitive tension with tender emotional healing.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Chica Umino's manga, March Comes In Like a Lion is celebrated for its unusually delicate handling of depression, isolation, and slow emotional recovery, brought to life through Shaft's distinctive, painterly visual direction under Akiyuki Shinbo. Its combination of grounded mental health portrayal and genuinely tense shogi matches earned it strong critical acclaim, standing out among sports and slice-of-life anime for treating its protagonist's inner struggles with real seriousness. It remains one of the more emotionally resonant character studies in modern anime. Its warm, patient pacing keeps drawing in new viewers years after release.
