Synopsis

Aliens called the Amanto have conquered Edo-era Japan and, adding insult to injury, banned samurai from carrying swords. Gintoki Sakata, a lazy, silver-haired former samurai with a sweet tooth for strawberry milk, gets by running an odd-jobs business with his ragtag friends, taking on whatever bizarre gig pays the rent. What follows is a gloriously unpredictable mix of parody, slapstick, and fourth-wall-breaking absurdity, one episode might spoof a famous shonen rival, the next might quietly break your heart with real samurai-era tragedy. It should not work as well as it does, and yet.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Gintama is based on Hideaki Sorachi's manga and was first adapted by Sunrise, premiering in 2006 and running, across many seasons, specials, and movies, until the story's conclusion over a decade later. Famous for its irreverent humor and constant parody of other anime and pop culture, it built a massive, devoted fanbase precisely because it refused to stay just a comedy, periodically pivoting into genuinely serious samurai-era drama and war. That tonal whiplash, treated as a feature rather than a flaw, is what turned Gintama from a gag series into one of the most beloved long-running anime franchises of its generation.
