Story

Synopsis

Sixteen years after being betrayed and killed by his own cultivation sect, Wei Wuxian wakes up in someone else's body, resurrected into a world that still remembers him as the most feared demonic cultivator in history. Determined to uncover the truth behind his own death, he reunites with Lan Wangji, an old classmate turned respected sect leader, and the two investigate a wave of strange, deadly incidents plaguing the cultivation world. Old grudges, buried secrets, and complicated feelings resurface as Wei Wuxian pieces together what really happened to him all those years ago.

This first season of the Mo Dao Zu Shi donghua adapts the opening chapters of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's novel Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, the property that later spawned the massively popular live-action drama The Untamed and a devoted global fandom. Produced by B.CMAY Pictures, it's credited with helping push Chinese animation onto the international stage, praised for its atmospheric world-building, moody soundtrack, and faithful handling of the novel's mystery-driven structure.
