Story

Synopsis

Earth has been bombarded into a radioactive ruin, and humanity has roughly a year left underground before extinction. The battleship Yamato, rebuilt with alien technology, is dispatched on a 148,000 light-year round trip to retrieve a device that can restore the planet. Between hostile fleets, a hard deadline, and a crew whose personal losses give the mission weight, the voyage becomes both a war story and a meditation on whether humanity deserves the rescue it's chasing. The scale is enormous, but the story stays anchored to the people aboard.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers

A remake of the hugely influential 1974 Space Battleship Yamato, this series updates one of the foundational works of Japanese science fiction anime with modern production values while preserving the original's structure and tone. The original series is widely credited with helping launch the anime industry's first major boom and inspiring an entire generation of creators, including the people behind Gundam and Evangelion. Yamato 2199 was warmly received as a rare remake that honors its source while genuinely improving on it, and it's frequently recommended as the best modern entry point to the franchise.

THEM Anime Reviews

Stig Høgset 2012

This is a rather nice modernization of an old classic of a space opera. It is encouraging that we can have this opportunity to rewatch it with a more keen eye. The things that worked already then and the things that this show changed or added both make up what is an excellent retelling of an old classic.

Kevin Cormack Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2205 Jan 3, 2025

More kinetic than Legend of the Galactic Heroes (but sharing its naval theme) and less frenetic than Macross, Yamato strikes a good middle ground for exciting animated space warfare.

It looks incredible from a distance but it's one dimensional when examined up close.
