About the studio
Satelight was founded in December 1995, and its name is actually an acronym: Sapporo, Animate, Technology, Entertainment, a nod to its original home in Sapporo, Hokkaido, before it expanded operations to Tokyo. The studio became known for the Macross Frontier and Macross Delta entries in that long-running mecha franchise, along with the Aquarion series and Symphogear. *A studio that started way up in Hokkaido and ended up defining chunks of one of anime's most iconic sci-fi franchises.* Being based outside the Tokyo bubble, at least initially, made Satelight something of an outlier among major anime studios, most of which cluster tightly around the capital. Three decades since its founding, Satelight has carved out a durable niche in music-driven, high-concept sci-fi anime, genres that reward exactly the kind of technical ambition the studio built its reputation on.
