About the studio
OLM has spent more than three decades doing one thing extraordinarily well: keeping Pokémon on television. Founded October 3, 1990 as Oriental Light and Magic (yes, a cheeky nod to Industrial Light & Magic), the studio grew out of former Studio Gallop staff led by Kunihiko Yuyama, who'd go on to direct Pokémon itself. Based in Setagaya, Tokyo, OLM has produced the Pokémon anime continuously since 1997, along with Yo-kai Watch and Beyblade Burst, but it's also proven surprisingly versatile with darker, more adult fare like Odd Taxi and the 2016 Berserk. *A studio that can handle both a Pikachu cartoon and grim samurai fantasy in the same decade is doing something right.* Its CG subsidiary, OLM Digital, launched in 1995 to handle the animation's growing visual effects needs. Few studios anywhere can claim a single ongoing production run as long as Pokémon, and OLM has been the one steering it the whole time.
