Story

Synopsis

Kokone Morikawa is a cheerful high school senior living in rural Kojima with her taciturn mechanic father Momotaro, constantly falling into involuntary afternoon naps. In her vivid dreams, Kokone transforms into Princess Ancien of Heartland, a fantastical kingdom powered by automobiles where artificial intelligence is strictly outlawed. Reality and fantasy collide dramatically when Tokyo police suddenly arrest her father on false corporate industrial espionage charges just days before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Using clues embedded within her magical dreams and accompanied by her loyal childhood friend Morio, Kokone races to Tokyo to uncover her mother's technological legacy.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Studio Signal.MD produced this imaginative 111-minute science-fiction fantasy adventure feature, released theatrically by Warner Bros. Japan in March 2017. Directed and written by Kenji Kamiyama, celebrated for *Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex* and *Eden of the East*, the film was Kamiyama's first original theatrical feature aimed at a family audience. Featuring expressive lead voice acting by popular actress Mitsuki Takahata and a musical score by Yoko Shimomura, the film earned international festival acclaim, screening at Annecy and Fantasia for its whimsical melding of mecha fantasy and contemporary Japanese technology.
