About the studio
VAP was founded January 24, 1981, and its name is an acronym for Video Audio Project, which is refreshingly literal as far as company names go. Based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, VAP was founded by and remains a subsidiary of Nippon Television Holdings, putting it in direct competition with Fuji Media Holdings' Pony Canyon for the home video and anime music market. *Two TV networks, two record labels, one very Tokyo rivalry.* VAP's anime credits include Elfen Lied, which it co-produced alongside ARMS and Genco before also handling its OVA release. Like Pony Canyon, VAP's role in anime is mostly on the distribution and financing side rather than animation itself, publishing home video releases and soundtracks tied to its production committee work. Over 40 years since its founding, VAP remains one of the quieter but consistent players in getting anime from studio to shelf.
