Biography
Kazuchika Kise was born March 6, 1965, in Osaka [1]. He trained at the Osaka studio Anime R after high school, then met Mitsuhisa Ishikawa while both worked on Future Police Urashiman (1983), and made his animation supervisor debut on Red Photon Zillion in 1987 at what would become Production I.G [1]. He supervised animation on Patlabor: The Movie (1989); he had planned to return to Osaka afterward, but the film's unexpected commercial success kept him at the studio [1]. When Production I.G later split into two creative divisions, Ishikawa invited Kise to become a founding board member and lead Studio 2, the branch built around theatrical features, which he has kept deliberately "free and open"; he has said his approach to recruiting is simply taking a promising newcomer out for a drink [1]. He has recalled his early Tokyo years under Mamoru Oshii on Patlabor as a culture shock after Osaka's looser production style, remembering that "in Tokyo there were directors and supervisors everywhere, and I constantly had to attend meetings" [2]. Japanese sources describe him as one of "I.G's three great animation gods," alongside animators Hiroyuki Okiura and Tetsuya Nishio, and recall Ishikawa calling him the studio's secret weapon [3]. He made his series directing debut as chief director of Ghost in the Shell: Arise (2013) [4], and has continued as character designer and animation director on titles including xxxHOLiC and Made in Abyss [3].
