Synopsis

The second Rebuild film covers familiar Evangelion ground while diverging significantly, introducing Mari Makinami and reshaping the relationships between Shinji, Asuka, and Rei in ways the original series never allowed. Shinji actually connects with people for once, which makes what follows considerably worse, as the Angel attacks escalate toward a confrontation that pushes him past every restraint the adults around him have placed on his piloting. The film's final act is where the Rebuild project decisively announces it is not simply a remake. Nothing about the ending resembles anything the original series attempted.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Hideaki Anno as part of the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, this film reworks the original Neon Genesis Evangelion with modern animation and substantial narrative changes. Its climactic sequence is frequently singled out as one of the most spectacular action set pieces in anime, and the film is generally considered the strongest entry in the Rebuild series. Evangelion's cultural influence on anime, particularly on mecha and psychological storytelling, remains enormous, and the Rebuild films introduced the franchise to an entirely new generation of viewers.
