About the studio
Warner Bros. Japan traces back to May 29, 1992, when it launched as Time Warner Entertainment Japan Inc. It went through a few names over the decades, merging with EastWest Japan and Warner Music Japan along the way, before settling on Warner Bros. Japan on April 1, 2016. *Corporate rebrands are basically their own genre of chaos, and this one had a few rounds.* Based in Tokyo, the company primarily distributes Warner Bros. content in Japan, but it's also stepped into original anime co-production, most notably Batman Ninja in 2018 and its sequel Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League in 2025, both made with Japanese studios reimagining Gotham through an anime lens. Its corporate parent has shifted from Time Warner to WarnerMedia after the 2018 AT&T merger, and then to Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022. For an American studio, its anime output is small but genuinely distinctive, proof that Batman looks pretty great with anime sensibilities applied to him.
