Synopsis
As the mysterious organization NERV collapses under betrayal and external assault, humanity's fate gets pulled into Instrumentality, a catastrophic, deeply psychological event forcing every human consciousness toward merging into one. Shinji Ikari, already fractured by trauma and self-loathing, finds himself at the center of a climax that blurs cosmic apocalypse with intensely personal psychological breakdown. It is abstract, unsettling, and confrontational in ways few animated films dare to be, refusing to offer easy catharsis and instead forcing Shinji, and the audience, to sit with genuinely uncomfortable questions about connection and self-acceptance.

Shinseiki Evangelion Movie: Air/Magokoro wo, Kimi ni, known as The End of Evangelion, is a theatrical film directed by Hideaki Anno and produced by Studio Gainax, released in 1997 as an alternate, more definitive conclusion to the original Neon Genesis Evangelion television series. Made partly in response to fan backlash over the original show's abstract ending, the film doubled down even further into surreal, deeply personal territory rather than offering a conventional resolution. It remains one of the most analyzed, debated, and influential anime films ever made, still shaping conversations about mecha, psychology, and unconventional storytelling decades later.
EVA's controversial theatrical conclusion comes to Netflix to horrify, baffle, and inspire a whole new audience. Nick Creamer offers his perspective on this landmark film.
The end of the world never looked so good. The End of Evangelion is a film that needs no introduction. Perhaps the most highly anticipated anime release...
All the good parts of the first half are dashed in an anticlimactic, grueling ending that makes you want to break your television. Asuka's final line is one of the most incredibly appropriate comments ever made about this movie.
