About the studio
Starchild Records was founded in 1981 by Junji Fujita, a King Records employee who'd previously overseen Sunrise's anime music output, and the label ran under that name until 2016. The name itself comes from the Star Child entity at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is a fittingly cosmic reference for a label that scored the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shaman King, and Love Hina. *A whole label named after a Kubrick reference, and somehow it fits perfectly.* Based in Tokyo as part of King Records, Starchild wasn't an animation studio; it was the music and financing side, producing soundtracks, character songs, and drama CDs for King Records' anime slate. In February 2016, it was restructured and renamed King Amusement Creative, closing the book on the Starchild name after 35 years of scoring some of anime's most recognizable soundtracks.
