Synopsis

Yukio Tanaka is fourteen, unremarkable, and completely adrift until a chance encounter with a guitarist named Ryusuke introduces him to rock music and a patchwork dog named Beck. Picking up a guitar changes the trajectory of his entire life, and the story follows the band's grinding, unglamorous climb through small venues, label politics, and the ordinary humiliations of being young and untalented before becoming young and talented. Music is treated as genuine labor, and Koyuki's growth is measured in practice hours rather than sudden breakthroughs.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Harold Sakuishi's manga by Madhouse, Beck is one of the most respected music anime ever produced, valued for taking the mechanics of learning an instrument seriously and for its extensive engagement with Western rock influences. Its English-language songs, performed within the show, gave it an unusual texture for anime of its period. The series remains a standard recommendation for viewers wanting a realistic portrayal of a band's development, and it retains a devoted following among musicians who found its depiction of practice unusually honest.
