Synopsis

Shichika Yasuri practices a school of swordsmanship that uses no sword, having trained his own body into the weapon instead. Hired by the strategist Togame to collect twelve legendary cursed blades scattered across Japan, he sets out on a journey structured as twelve distinct confrontations, each with its own opponent, setting, and philosophy. The series is dense with dialogue and deliberately theatrical, treating each blade's acquisition as a self-contained story while a larger scheme quietly assembles itself in the background. Every opponent forces Shichika to reconsider what he actually believes about fighting.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from NisiOisiN's novels by White Fox, Katanagatari aired as twelve monthly episodes of roughly fifty minutes each, an unusual broadcast format that suited its episodic, chapter-based structure. Its distinctive flat, angular art style and its heavy reliance on extended conversation set it far apart from typical action anime, dividing viewers accordingly. Those who connect with it consider it among the finest works from the Monogatari author, praised for structural inventiveness and a conclusion that recontextualizes the entire journey preceding it. Its unusual broadcast format remains one of the more interesting experiments in anime scheduling.
