Keitarou Motonaga began his trajectory in the anime industry in the mid-1980s, initially working as a production assistant on the 1985 series Hai! Step Jun. By 1986, he had transitioned into the role of assistant episode director for Spaceship Sagittarius. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Motonaga honed his skills in episode direction and storyboarding, operating under his real name as well as the pseudonym Taro Chikuhou (筑豊太郎).
