Story
Synopsis
Kafka Hibino cleans up kaiju corpses for a living, having long since abandoned his childhood dream of joining the Defense Force that kills them. Then a small creature crawls into his mouth and he wakes up able to transform into a kaiju himself, which is both the most useful and the most dangerous thing that could possibly have happened to a thirty-two-year-old with one last shot at the entrance exam. Hiding what he is becomes considerably harder than passing the test. Every transformation risks exposing exactly what he is trying to become.

Adapted from Naoya Matsumoto's manga by Production I.G, Kaiju No. 8 arrived with enormous anticipation given the source material's exceptional commercial performance, and it became one of the most watched anime of its release year. Its premise, centering an older protagonist chasing a dream he had already given up on, gave it a hook distinct from typical shonen's teenage prodigies. The combination of kaiju action, workplace comedy, and a genuinely sympathetic underdog earned it a broad international audience quickly. Its older protagonist gave the shonen formula a genuinely fresh angle.
