About the studio
TOHO animation is a label, not a studio, launched in April 2012 when the century old Toho Co. established an in-house Animation Business Office within its video division. Its first credited release was Majestic Prince in 2013, and since then it's grown into the umbrella under which Toho plans, finances, and distributes anime, including production committee involvement in titles like Attack on Titan and Darling in the Franxx. *Worth untangling: this is different from Toho Animation Studio, a separate actual production studio Toho took a controlling stake in back in 2022.* TOHO animation is the business side, the label stamped on the box, so to speak, while the studio work happens elsewhere across Toho's various partners. Based at Toho's Chiyoda, Tokyo headquarters, it's a relatively young label riding on a very old company's infrastructure and industry connections, which turns out to be a pretty effective combination.
