Synopsis

Kakeru Kurahara, a talented but troubled runner fleeing his own past, gets recruited by Haiji Kiyose into a ramshackle dormitory of college students, most of whom have never competed seriously in their lives. Haiji's audacious goal is to somehow qualify this ragtag group for the prestigious Hakone Ekiden relay, a feat that seems absurd given the team's total lack of experience. What follows is a story about discipline, unlikely camaraderie, and the specific kind of transformation that only comes from training toward something genuinely difficult together.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Shion Miura's novel, Run with the Wind stands out among sports anime for focusing on long-distance running, a less flashy sport compared to typical anime staples, and for centering a cast of characters who start out as complete amateurs rather than hidden prodigies. Production I.G's adaptation earned praise for its grounded, patient character work and its honest depiction of just how much unglamorous effort real athletic achievement requires. It's frequently recommended as one of the more emotionally mature sports anime for viewers wanting substance over spectacle.
