Synopsis

Maru and Kiruko travel a ruined Japan overrun by grotesque creatures, searching for a place called Heaven based on almost nothing. In a parallel thread, children live inside a sealed facility with no knowledge of the outside world, raised by staff who will not explain what happened. The series alternates between the two, slowly revealing how they connect, and it handles gender, bodily autonomy, and adolescent confusion with a directness that regularly makes viewers uncomfortable in productive ways. Every answer arrives late enough to reframe what came before it entirely.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Masakazu Ishiguro's manga by Production I.G, Heavenly Delusion earned strong critical acclaim for its striking art direction, its mystery structure, and its unusual willingness to engage with gender and sexuality as genuine sources of confusion rather than plot devices. Its dual-narrative structure withholds information deliberately, rewarding attentive viewers. The series was widely regarded as one of the standout releases of its year, particularly for viewers seeking science fiction that treats its central mystery as more than a delivery mechanism for action. Its art direction and creature design were widely praised on release.
