The Biggest Film of the Year Didn't Win Best Picture

That honor went to A Silent Voice, Naoko Yamada's quiet, aching drama about bullying, guilt, and the long road back to friendship. It's a very different kind of film, less body-swapping comet romance, more slow emotional excavation, and the judges decided it was the stronger piece of work.

Here's where it gets interesting, though. Makoto Shinkai still walked away with Best Director, and the award was specifically for Your Name. Think about that for a second: the film that won Best Director lost Best Picture to a completely different movie. That's not a mistake, that's a jury making two separate judgments and letting them land wherever they landed, even if the result looks a little contradictory on paper.

Over on the television side, there was no such split decision. Yuri!!! on Ice ran away with Animation of the Year, Television, and it did so by becoming a genuine global phenomenon. A figure-skating anime with a tender same-sex romance at its center, it picked up international fans who had never watched anime before in their lives. It also picked up the Anime Fan Award, the first of two consecutive wins in that category.
