Synopsis

In elementary school, Shoya Ishida led the bullying of Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf classmate, until the fallout got him ostracized in turn. Years later, weighed down by guilt and isolation, Shoya seeks Shoko out to try to make amends, however inadequate that feels. What unfolds is a quietly devastating story about cruelty, communication, and whether real redemption is even possible, told with remarkable visual sensitivity toward Shoko's deafness and Shoya's crushing social anxiety. It does not offer easy forgiveness or a tidy bow. Instead it sits with the discomfort honestly, which is exactly why it lingers.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Koe no Katachi, known in English as A Silent Voice, is based on Yoshitoki Oima's manga and was adapted into a 2016 film by Kyoto Animation, directed by Naoko Yamada. It tackles bullying, disability, and suicidal ideation with unusual care and nuance for the medium, earning widespread critical acclaim and numerous industry awards for both its storytelling and its animation. It is frequently cited alongside films like Your Name as a defining anime movie of its era, and it remains a touchstone reference point for anime that treats difficult, real-world themes without flinching or oversimplifying them.
