About the studio
Kyoto Animation has an unusually layered founding story: informally started in 1981, formally incorporated July 12, 1985, and reorganized as a full corporation in 1999. It was founded by husband and wife Hideaki and Yoko Hatta along with former Mushi Production staff, growing from a subcontracting studio doing inbetween and finishing work into one of the most respected full production houses in anime. Based in Uji, Kyoto rather than Tokyo, KyoAni's location alone sets it apart from most of this list. *Geography matters more than you'd think in an industry this Tokyo-centric.* Its catalog includes The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad, K-On!, and Violet Evergarden, shows praised for meticulous animation and emotional storytelling. Hideaki Hatta led the studio for over four decades until his death in February 2026 at age 76, with his son Shinichiro Hatta now serving as president. Through immense tragedy and, now, generational change, Kyoto Animation's reputation for craftsmanship and heart has made it one of the most beloved studios among fans worldwide.
