Synopsis
Junior high school pals Pyontarou, Hiroshi, and Sasame discover a mysterious discarded DVD that opens a dimensional gateway into an alternate Earth. When Pyontarou's beloved little sister Futaba wanders through the portal, she is promptly kidnapped by monstrous extraterrestrial invaders that have wiped out human civilization in that dimension. Plunging into the apocalyptic wasteland, the three boys discover an astonishing dimensional anomaly: their simplified, cartoonish 2D bodies render them invulnerable supermen within the hyper-realistic parallel world. Armed with absurd physics and fearless determination, the comedic trio battles terrifying alien armies to bring Futaba safely home.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Yuki Ikeda's groundbreaking science-fiction manga serialized in Kodansha's *Monthly Shonen Magazine*, *Thunder 3* was animated by studio Unend for television broadcast in 2026. The production gained widespread attention in the animation industry for faithfully reproducing the manga's unique aesthetic contrast, juxtaposing retro cartoon character designs against photorealistic 3D environments and biomechanical monster models. Supported by major broadcasters including Fuji TV and Animax, the adaptation highlights themes of sibling devotion and sci-fi satire.
