Story

Synopsis

In the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and tsunami along the northeastern coast of Japan, seventeen-year-old runaway Yui and an orphaned eight-year-old girl named Hiyori meet at a coastal evacuation shelter. Seeking escape from abusive pasts, the girls are taken in by Kiwa, a kindly elderly grandmother who invites them to live in Mayoiga, a traditional thatched-roof folk house perched upon a seaside cape. In this magical sanctuary overlooking the sea, the traumatized trio heals alongside friendly folklore spirits, uniting with local supernatural beings to protect their newfound family from malevolent sorrow lurking in the sea.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
David Production animated this heartwarming 105-minute fantasy drama feature, released in Japanese theaters by Aniplex in August 2021. Directed by Shinya Kawatsura, known for *Non Non Biyori*, with a screenplay written by Reiko Yoshida, the film adapted the award-winning novel by Sachiko Kashiwaba. Produced as part of the Zutto Ouen Project commemorating the tenth anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku disaster, the movie won the prestigious Best Animation Film prize at the 76th Mainichi Film Awards. The film was praised for its serene coastal landscapes, folklore warmth, and tender message of community resilience.
