Synopsis

Novelist Makio Koudai has built a quiet, solitary life for herself, so when her fifteen-year-old niece Asa Takumi loses both parents in an accident and needs a guardian, taking her in is not exactly a natural fit. The two are prickly, guarded, and grieving in completely different ways, and the show does not rush their bond. Instead it sits patiently with the awkward silences, small kindnesses, and slow accumulation of trust between two people who never expected to need each other. It is a tender, understated family drama about learning to let someone in when you have spent years keeping everyone out.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Ikoku Nikki, released internationally as Journal with Witch, is based on Tomoko Yamashita's manga, and its TV anime debuted on January 4, 2026, airing on ABC TV, Tokyo MX, and BS Asahi. The series drew attention for its unusually restrained, character-focused approach to grief and found family, favoring quiet emotional realism over melodrama. Early reception highlighted the nuanced central relationship between aunt and niece as a standout, with critics noting the show's willingness to let discomfort and awkwardness sit on screen rather than resolving conflicts too neatly or too fast.
