Story

Synopsis

Ash Lynx runs a powerful New York gang at just seventeen, hardened by a childhood of exploitation that left him fiercely protective of the people he lets in. When a mysterious drug tied to a decades-old conspiracy surfaces, Ash crosses paths with Eiji Okumura, a gentle Japanese photographer's assistant whose presence in his life becomes the one thing worth more than survival. Together they get pulled into a dangerous web involving organized crime, government secrets, and the man who has haunted Ash's entire life, forcing a reckoning neither of them can walk away from unscathed.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Akimi Yoshida's beloved manga, Banana Fish updates its 1980s setting to the present day while keeping the story's exploration of trauma, power, and devotion intact, a shift that mostly worked despite some pacing compromises required to fit a serialized story into a single season. MAPPA's production brought striking visual polish to the adaptation, and the show became a breakout hit for its emotionally devastating final stretch, sparking widespread fan discussion online. It remains one of the most talked-about drama anime of its release year, still cited for its ending's impact.
