About the studio
MAPPA was founded June 14, 2011 by Masao Maruyama, who co-founded Madhouse decades earlier and left it at age 70 because he felt the studio had become too large and inflexible to move quickly anymore. *Starting a whole new studio at 70 because your last one got too corporate is a genuinely inspiring kind of stubbornness.* MAPPA stands for Maruyama Animation Produce Project Association, and based in Suginami, Tokyo, it's become one of the defining studios of the last decade, the name behind Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and the explosive Final Season of Attack on Titan. Maruyama himself left MAPPA in April 2016 to found yet another studio, Studio M2, handing the reins to the team that would go on to build MAPPA's current reputation for ambitious, high-output production. Barely 15 years old, MAPPA has become one of the most talked-about, and fans would add most overworked, studios in modern anime.
