Synopsis

Kaoru Nishimi transfers to a seaside town in 1966 and expects the same isolation he's always experienced, until he falls in with Sentaro Kawabuchi, a rough delinquent with an unexpected talent for drums. Through Sentaro and his childhood friend Ritsuko, Kaoru discovers jazz, and the three build a friendship complicated by attraction, class, and the specific intensity of adolescent loyalty. The music sequences are meticulously animated, and the story treats jazz less as a subject than as the thing that makes honesty between these three possible.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe with music by Yoko Kanno, the Cowboy Bebop team, and adapted from Yuki Kodama's manga by MAPPA and Tezuka Productions, Kids on the Slope is celebrated for its rotoscoped performance sequences, which were animated from real musicians' playing to capture accurate technique. Its period setting is rendered with careful attention to 1960s Japanese social texture. The series remains one of the most respected music anime ever made, valued equally for the authenticity of its performances and the emotional precision of its coming-of-age story.
