Synopsis

Prohibition-era America plays host to a chaotic tangle of stories involving alchemists who accidentally achieved immortality centuries ago, warring mafia families, a pair of spectacularly incompetent thieves, and a transcontinental train where several of these plots collide catastrophically. The narrative jumps freely across decades and perspectives, withholding context on purpose and trusting viewers to assemble the timeline themselves. Nobody is really the protagonist, everyone is somebody's protagonist, and the pleasure comes from watching disconnected threads snap into place at exactly the moment you stop expecting them to.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Ryohgo Narita's light novels by Brain's Base, Baccano! is celebrated for its audacious nonlinear structure, which packs an enormous ensemble cast into just thirteen episodes without ever fully explaining itself upfront. Its jazz-driven soundtrack and stylish period aesthetic earned widespread acclaim, and its English dub is frequently cited as one of the best ever produced, given how much the setting suits American voice acting. The series remains a favorite recommendation for viewers wanting something structurally ambitious, and its reputation has only grown in the years since its original broadcast.
