Synopsis

Attack on Titan flips its own premise upside down: this time, the story opens across the sea in Marley, following young Eldian soldiers who do not even know they are watching their own people's enemies from the other side. When Eren infiltrates Marley's forces on a mission that shatters everything the audience thought they understood, old rivalries with Reiner and Bertholt resurface with brutal new context. It is a bold structural gamble, forcing viewers to reconsider years of assumed heroes and villains, and it pays off by making the franchise's endgame feel genuinely unpredictable rather than a simple march to victory.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season is based on Hajime Isayama's manga, with production shifting from Wit Studio to MAPPA for this and all subsequent seasons, airing from December 2020 to April 2021. It adapts the manga's dramatic Marley arc, widely praised for its ambitious perspective shift and its willingness to complicate the show's earlier good-versus-evil framing. The change in animation studio was initially controversial among fans, but the season's storytelling ambition and pacing largely won over skeptics, setting up the franchise's final, most morally complex stretch of episodes.
