Story

Synopsis

Mikoto Misaka is a Level 5 esper in Academy City, a research metropolis where students are ranked by psychic ability and where a great deal of unethical experimentation happens out of public view. Alongside her roommate Kuroko Shirai and their friends, Mikoto investigates incidents involving illegal ability enhancement, black market technology, and research programs that treat students as materials. Her electromagnetic powers make her formidable, but the city's institutional problems consistently prove harder to solve than any individual opponent. Every case exposes something the city would prefer its students never discovered.

Adapted from Kazuma Kamachi and Motoi Fuyukawa's manga by J.C.Staff, A Certain Scientific Railgun is a spinoff of A Certain Magical Index focusing on one of that series' most popular supporting characters. It is widely regarded as stronger than its parent series, benefiting from tighter plotting and a protagonist whose motivations are clearer. The franchise's Academy City setting, with its rigid ability rankings and hidden research programs, has sustained multiple interconnected series across many years. Its tighter plotting is the main reason viewers recommend it over its parent series.
