Kousei Arima was a piano prodigy until his mother's death left him unable to hear his own playing properly, silencing the music that once defined him. Two years into hiding from performance entirely, he meets Kaori Miyazono, a free-spirited violinist whose wild, unrestrained style is nothing like the rigid technique he grew up with. Kaori drags him back toward the stage, and toward feeling something again, but the story never lets that healing come easy or free. It builds toward an ending that has become legendary for how hard it hits, blending music, grief, and first love into something genuinely unforgettable.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, known in English as Your Lie in April, is based on Naoshi Arakawa's manga, animated by A-1 Pictures, and aired from 2014 to 2015. It became one of the most beloved and most-cried-over anime of its decade, praised for its detailed, emotionally charged musical performances and its unflinching handling of grief and mortality. Its combination of gorgeous animation, a genuinely moving central relationship, and a devastating final act cemented it as a modern classic of the romance and drama genre, still frequently recommended as an essential emotional gut-punch.
Four stars with an asterisk- just on the story itself, I would have stopped at three. The music and art put it over. The show really needed a different style of humor, and a protagonist who was willing to put up a stronger fight against his demons.
