Story

Synopsis

Naofumi Iwatani is summoned to another world as the Shield Hero, the least respected of four legendary defenders, and within days he is falsely accused of a crime that destroys his reputation and leaves him with no allies, no money, and a weapon incapable of dealing damage. Buying a demihuman slave named Raphtalia because no one else will fight beside him, he rebuilds from nothing with a considerably harder edge than the story's other heroes ever needed to develop. Every ally he gains is someone the world had already thrown away entirely.

Adapted from Aneko Yusagi's light novels by Kinema Citrus, The Rising of the Shield Hero became one of the most widely discussed isekai of its season, partly for its unusually bitter protagonist and partly for the controversy surrounding its opening episodes' handling of a false accusation. Its commercial success sustained multiple seasons. The series is frequently cited in discussions of the genre's revenge-flavored subcategory, and its protagonist's trajectory from betrayal toward reluctant leadership drives its appeal. Its bitter protagonist gave the genre a tonal alternative that proved commercially durable.
