Story
Synopsis
Cid Kagenou's only ambition is to be the mysterious mastermind operating in the background of someone else's story, so he fabricates a shadow organization, invents an enemy for it, and recruits followers who take every word seriously. The joke is that his entirely fictional conspiracy keeps turning out to be accurate, his made-up enemy exists, and his followers achieve real victories while he continues believing he is simply roleplaying extremely well. He remains completely unaware that he is genuinely saving the world. Every follower he recruits takes his fabricated mythology completely seriously.

Adapted from Daisuke Aizawa's light novels by Nexus, The Eminence in Shadow became a standout isekai comedy through a premise built entirely on dramatic irony, with a deluded protagonist whose fantasies keep being validated by circumstances he never intended. Its combination of that structural joke with genuinely strong action animation gave it substantial appeal beyond typical isekai audiences. The series earned a strong international following and quickly became one of the more frequently recommended comedies within an extremely crowded genre. Its action animation gives the comedy considerably more staying power.
