Story

Synopsis

Following the Invertia catastrophe that decimated twentieth-century civilization, an extraterrestrial element called mana spawned Genestella, humans blessed with superhuman combat parameters. In Asterisk, an academy city floating on a vast crater lake, six rival schools compete in the legendary Phoenix Festa tournaments. Ayato Amagiri transfers to Seidoukan Academy, ostensibly to discover the truth behind his elder sister's mysterious disappearance. After rescuing the proud fiery princess Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld, Ayato pairs up with her for the tournament. Armed with the formidable Ser-Veresta blade, he fights across the arena while uncovering city-wide conspiracies.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Yuu Miyazaki's light novel series illustrated by Okiura, this futuristic tournament action anime was produced by A-1 Pictures. Directed by Kenji Seto alongside general director Manabu Ono, the twelve-episode first cour aired in fall 2015, accompanied by an electronic soundtrack composed by Rasmus Faber. Known for its fluid lightsaber duels, vibrant academy setting, and opening theme by Shiena Nishizawa, the series cemented its status as a staple modern battle-harem anime, followed by a second twelve-episode cour in 2016.
