Prior to being purchased at an underground London auction by the ancient thorn sorcerer Elias Ainsworth, young Chise Hatori lives a miserable, isolated childhood in Japan. Possessing the rare constitution of a Sleigh Beggy, Chise is tormented day and night by terrifying paranormal apparitions that nobody else can perceive. Fleeing into the dense woods to escape pursuing spirits, a young Chise stumbles upon a grand Victorian manor hidden deep within the trees. Inside, she discovers the Forest Library, tended by kindly librarian Riichi Miura. For the first time in her lonely existence, Chise finds a warm sanctuary filled with wonder and enchanting picture books, forming a fleeting bond of comfort.
