bilibili started June 26, 2009 as Mikufans, a fan community built around Hatsune Miku, before rebranding to Bilibili in January 2010. The name comes from a sound effect tied to Mikoto Misaka in A Certain Scientific Railgun, which is about as anime an origin story as a company can have. *Started as a fan site, became a media giant. Not bad.* Based in Shanghai, bilibili grew into China's largest platform for streaming licensed Japanese anime, and it doesn't just distribute; it invests in and co-produces original animation too. For an entire generation of Chinese anime fans, bilibili has functioned as the primary gateway to Japanese series, the platform where legal streaming became the norm instead of the exception. Barely 15 years old, it's already reshaped how one of the world's largest audiences accesses anime, and it did it starting from a fan page for a virtual pop star.
