Story

Synopsis

Qin Mu grows up in the Disabled Elderly Village, raised by nine old people whose origins nobody explains and whose combined skills turn out to be extraordinary. When the cattle he herds start speaking, he begins to understand the true nature of Daxu, a land abandoned by gods where demons descend with the darkness and divine bones litter the ruins. Armed with everything the nine elders taught him and a belief in his own potential that may have been a well-meaning lie, Qin Mu sets out to carve his own place in that world.

Adapted from Zhai Zhu's web novel and released on Bilibili in late 2024, Tales of Herding Gods was planned as an unusually long donghua run, reflecting the scale of its source material. Its central conceit, a protagonist who becomes genuinely formidable partly because he was encouraged by a comforting falsehood about his own talent, sets it apart from typical cultivation narratives built on hidden bloodlines and inherited destiny. The series has drawn attention within the donghua community for its distinctive mythological setting and its unusually large ensemble of mentor figures.
