Story

Synopsis

While real-world government official Seijirou Kikuoka interviews Kazuto Kirito Kirigaya about his harrowing experiences inside Aincrad and ALfheim, the girls gather at the survivor school swimming pool. Suguha wants to learn how to swim, prompting Asuna, Lisbeth, and Silica to share fond, humorous memories of their virtual adventures while offering water encouragement. Once Kirito's debriefing concludes, the entire party logs into ALfheim Online to fulfill a heartfelt promise to Yui: diving into an underwater ocean realm to see a real whale. However, an unexpected aquatic dungeon quest turns the leisurely swim into a spirited dragon battle.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Tomohiko Ito and animated by A-1 Pictures, *Sword Art Online: Extra Edition* premiered as a special two-hour New Year's Eve television broadcast on December 31, 2013. Serving as a transitional bridge between the first and second television seasons, the production combined a comprehensive recap of the Aincrad and Fairy Dance arcs with brand-new comedic pool scenes and an original underwater ALfheim quest. The special achieved major broadcast ratings and formally teased the upcoming Phantom Bullet storyline.
