Synopsis
Yotaro, a young ex-convict with nothing left to lose, becomes the reluctant apprentice of Yakumo, a master of rakugo, the traditional Japanese art of comedic solo storytelling, hoping performance might give his life some direction. As Yakumo slowly opens up about his own tragic past, a rivalry and doomed romance with a fellow performer named Sukeroku that still haunts him decades later, the story unfolds two intertwined lives shaped by ambition, jealousy, and grief across pre and postwar Japan. It is elegant, patient, and deeply moving, treating a dying art form with genuine reverence.
