Yotaro, a young ex-convict with nothing left to lose, becomes the reluctant apprentice of Yakumo, a master of rakugo, the traditional Japanese art of comedic solo storytelling, hoping performance might give his life some direction. As Yakumo slowly opens up about his own tragic past, a rivalry and doomed romance with a fellow performer named Sukeroku that still haunts him decades later, the story unfolds two intertwined lives shaped by ambition, jealousy, and grief across pre and postwar Japan. It is elegant, patient, and deeply moving, treating a dying art form with genuine reverence.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is based on Haruko Kumota's manga, produced by Studio Deen, and aired in 2016. It earned widespread critical acclaim for its unusually mature, novelistic storytelling and its meticulous, lovingly rendered depiction of rakugo performance, incorporating lengthy, faithfully animated storytelling sequences into the show itself. The series won multiple industry awards and is frequently cited as one of the finest anime about traditional Japanese art forms, praised for treating its historical setting and central tragedy with real depth rather than nostalgia alone.
This second season treads a different path than the first, but in many ways its story-telling is even more evocative this time around to create one of the best drama series you're ever likely to see.
