Story

Synopsis

This film brings Madoka Kaname's story to its conclusion, revisiting the devastating events of the TV series' finale before pushing into new territory that reframes everything viewers thought they understood about her ultimate wish. The world of magical girls and witches gets reexamined from a different angle, testing whether the sacrifice made at the end of the series can hold, or whether something is quietly working to undo it. It closes the franchise's original story with both an emotional gut-punch and a genuinely surprising twist.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Akiyuki Shinbo at Shaft and written by Gen Urobuchi, this second film serves as the true narrative endpoint for the original Madoka Magica saga, following a first film that largely recapped the TV series. Puella Magi Madoka Magica had already reshaped the magical girl genre with its bleak deconstruction of typical tropes, and this conclusion doubled down on that ambition with a finale that critics widely praised for sticking the landing. It remains one of the most acclaimed anime film endings of its generation.
