Synopsis

Rei Kiriyama, a withdrawn teenage professional shogi player still carrying deep grief and isolation, keeps slowly opening up thanks to the warmth of the Kawamoto sisters next door. Season 2 pushes further into heavier territory, tackling bullying, family estrangement, and mental health with unusual honesty, while Rei's growth as both a player and a person continues in painfully realistic fits and starts. It never rushes his healing or pretends it is linear. Between hushed, tense shogi matches and quiet domestic scenes with the sisters, it builds one of the most sincere, unhurried portraits of depression and recovery in anime.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
3-gatsu no Lion Season 2 is based on Chica Umino's manga and produced by Studio Shaft, directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, airing in 2017 as a direct continuation of the first 2016 season. It is celebrated for its unusually thoughtful, non-melodramatic treatment of depression, grief, and bullying, backed by Shaft's distinctive, painterly visual style. The series has earned a devoted following and multiple award nominations for its emotional honesty, and it is frequently recommended as one of the finer character studies in modern anime, precisely because it refuses to treat healing as something that happens on a neat schedule.
