Synopsis

Riko dreams of becoming a legendary cave raider like her missing mother, exploring the Abyss, a massive, seemingly bottomless pit filled with ancient relics and creatures that grow more dangerous, and more physically punishing to escape from, the deeper you descend. When she finds a robot boy named Reg with no memory of his past, the two set off together into the depths, chasing answers and treasure in equal measure. What looks at first like a whimsical adventure story steadily reveals itself to be something far darker and more brutal, unafraid to put its young protagonists through genuine horror.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Made in Abyss is based on Akihito Tsukushi's manga, animated by Kinema Citrus, and aired in 2017. It became notorious for its striking tonal whiplash, pairing gorgeously whimsical, storybook-style visuals with unexpectedly graphic violence and body horror, a combination that earned it both passionate acclaim and considerable controversy. Critics widely praised its worldbuilding and emotional depth despite, or because of, its willingness to be genuinely disturbing, and it has since expanded into multiple film compilations, an original sequel film, and a full second television season.
